How long will I wait for Access to Work to respond?

Modified on Thu, 4 Sep at 8:38 AM

Access to Work supports many people, and applications have increased recently. This can lead to long wait times. How long you wait depends on your application type and circumstances.

New applications

When you apply, you’ll be placed in one of three queues:

Less than four weeks before starting a new job – average wait: 4–6 weeks

Already in an employed role – average wait: 8 months

Self-employed or company director – average wait: 14 months

If possible, apply less than four weeks before starting a new role to avoid long delays.

Renewal applications

You can request a renewal 12 weeks before your award ends. There’s one queue, with an average wait of 4–5 weeks.

Some people wait much longer – in rare cases up to 9 months. If you haven’t been contacted within 6 weeks, contact Access to Work to check your place in the queue. If your award ends before you’ve been contacted, you may want to make a complaint.

Applying early helps avoid gaps in your support.

Reconsiderations

If you disagree with a decision, you can request a reconsideration within 4 weeks of the decision date. The average wait for these is 6–7 months.

When can your case be prioritised?

Access to Work may act more quickly if:

You’ve just started a new job and can’t work without support

You’re returning from sick leave and need support to do so

You need temporary support after an accident or surgery

You’re at risk of losing your job without support

Escalation requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you can't wait, phone the helpline after you've made your application and explain your circumstances.

Some people have sped things up by asking their MP for help and making a complaint, especially when delays have affected their ability to attend work.
